4. Vaccine-Preventable Diseases

Objectives

a. Identify vaccine-preventable diseases for which vaccines are included in the ACIP Recommended Child and Adolescent Immunization Schedule for  ages 18 years or younger.
b. Identify vaccine-preventable diseases for which vaccines are included in the ACIP Recommended Adult Immunization Schedule for Adults Ages 19 years or older.
c. Identify the diseases prevented by travel vaccines.
d. Describe the etiologic agent, pathogenesis, signs and symptoms, appropriate infection control and prevention (e.g., standard, droplet, airborne and contact precaution), and epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases.
e. Explain the nurse’s role in vaccine-preventable disease surveillance.
f. Describe nursing roles related to vaccine-preventable diseases: advocate, educator, lifelong learner, and reporter.
